About Me

My photo
I'm basically just your average teenager.. I have a passion for writing and actually work for our town's local paper. I'm working on a book at the moment called "Beneath the Ashes." It's about a girl battling an eating disorder.I'm not sure when it will be finished - probably a long time from now since I am so busy. Anyway, if you want to get to know me better, keep on reading. I'd like any comments, criticism, etc.

Segregation - Composition 1 Essay

Problem Solution Essay

Segregation is said to have been treated, made obsolete and is expected to no longer be an existing problem amongst our country. However, this is wrong. Segregation still exists, even in small, quaint towns. Taking a look around the country, one can see many forms of segregation in many different places. In Warroad, Minnesota, one might not notice the segregation taking place just in the small town of 1700 people. Unfortunately, it is there and this serious issue needs to be addressed.
The form of segregation that is typically seen in this part of the country would be the separation of the Native Americans from the whites. Indian Reservations are created to house the Native Americans, separating them from the rest of society. This is not to condemn them or to place them beneath anyone else, however, this plan was designed to give them their own land and end the quarrelling between the Native Americans and whites. This solution did not end the problem, it only set it aside but it will continue until addressed.
In Warroad, Minnesota there is a small section of land set aside for those of the Native American heritage. This land holds small houses and apartment buildings. Someone might see this as a positive aspect however it can be viewed as a serious issue due to the hostility between Native Americans and whites in schools and places of business. Separating them from the rest of the town has actually worsened the relationship between whites and Native Americans. This is mostly due to the fact that the relationship problem between the two heritages was never addressed and settled, it was simply put aside.
One can also see this form of segregation in towns versus Indian Reservations and can sense the negative bond between the two heritages by simply passing through one in which you don’t belong. For example, a white person might fear his or her life when passing through an
Indian Reservation. This is not the right way for humans to live and act, especially in the United States of America, where our goal is to end segregation.
One reason I feel that there is a hostile attitude between Native Americans and whites today is because of the lack of ruling and authority over the Native American culture. Also, the fact that Native Americans are granted the gift of no taxation at certain places, under certain circumstances can cause some to be jealous and therefore bitter towards them. Native Americans had some legal authority and tax obligations taken from them long ago. Although they live in America, under the same President and government officials, they do not follow the same precedents as whites. Some might call this unfair while some feel it was a good decision. Either way, it is segregation. One can see this negative reflection in school settings, in which it has been made clear to me each day.
This issue with segregation of Native Americans and whites can arouse many tense feelings and emotions between the people. This is a moral, political and economic problem, which means it will take more hard work and determination to mend.
In solving this issue, I believe that, first of all, we must decide how to make taxation and legal authority more fair and equal for both heritages. This is a political issue that our country must come to equal terms on. The set-up we have now is encouraging more hostility between us and it is not encouraging a change in this negative relationship. It is giving the Native Americans what they want and keeping them separated from the rest of society, not encouraging them to get on equal terms with the white people.
I also believe that physically separating the Native Americans from the blacks arouses issues between the two heritages. In physically separating them, we are also emotionally separating them. This can affect our chances of getting involved with each other and uniting as people of the same country. While we all have different religious beliefs and lifestyles, we are all American people with American values.
The issue presented here can be fixed. As a country, as individual states, as individual towns and as individual people, we can reverse this dangerous cycle. In working together, we can rid our country of this problem that seems to be irrelevant and of little importance. Although it might appear this way and one might not have even noticed, it is causing more problems for our country then one can believe.
